Speak Out About the Wording of the New Policy

Here is a list of the problems that I see with the new Giant Eagle Policy.

Please comment with your edits. Here are the issues that I have found so far:

One coupon per item(s) purchased as stated on the coupon with a maximum of 12 coupons per same 12 items purchased in a 24-hour period per Giant Eagle Advantage Card® customer.

Does this mean that you can not purchase 24, using 12 of one coupon and 12 of a different. For example, 50 cents/1 (12) and 75/2 (12)?

Coupon value cannot exceed the price of the item(s) purchased. If it does, we can only redeem up to the value of the item(s) purchased. (Excluding sales tax)

Does this mean that your systems will be fixed so that coupons off of two items will now scan correctly?

For example, last week I had 75 cents off the purchase of BOTH Betty crocker cake mix and Betty Crocker frosting. The frosting was the lower priced item and when the coupon was scanned, I only got 40 cents off.

The cashier refused to correct it, even after I explained that the total cost of the two items was far more than 80 cents.

Stacking (combining electronic and paper coupons) of manufacturers’ coupons is prohibited.

eOffers? Do they combine with manufacturer's paper coupons and IPs?

Items must be purchased at the time of redemption.

If you forget to use your coupons at the time of purchase, we will accept them with your receipt and Giant Eagle Advantage Card® up to 10 days beyond the date on the receipt.

These statements contradict one another.

Printed Internet coupons
The coupon must be obtained from a legitimate site.
A maximum of two “like” coupons will be accepted.

What sites? Coupons.com, redplum, smartsource? You spell out cellfire, etc for eOffers. TELL us what sites are legitimate.
What does 'like' mean? Define it.

Giant Eagle® DOES NOT accept the following Printed Internet Coupons:
“FREE with no purchase necessary” and “Buy One Get One Free”.

We reserve the right to refuse any coupons that we believe to be photo copied, counterfeit or invalid for any other reason.

Any coupon with a value over $3 will not be accepted except where advertised by Giant Eagle®for a specific promotion.


"Free" and "FREE with no purchase necessary" are TWO different things.

Manufacturers like Garnier nutrisse are sending coupons to customers for new products and they are printed on the bottom of form letters. They are printed on security paper and they say free, with a price limit printed directly on the coupon.

Yet, the cashiers and managers are refusing them.

"invalid for any other reason"

Very ambiguous.
There are cashiers at my local store who REFUSE ALL PRINTED COUPONS because they consider internet coupons 'invalid'. They scan, they are from legitimate sites. How do we, as consumers, handle this?

GE Coupon Policy

I've read several different things, but the policy on GE's website has NOT changed. Apparently the new policy only allows 2 "like" internet coupons per day and prohibits stacking of eOffers and coupons. If this is the case, I'm getting rid of the eOffers - they don't double and the coupons are better.

Making the Most of Your Coupons

1. Wait to use your coupons. Don’t use them right away. Wait closer to the expiration date for a good sale. For example, take a $1/1 Crest toothpaste coupon. When Walgreens, Rite Aid, CVS, Albertson’s or your local store has them on sale, THEN use the coupon on the sale price. many times these stores will have toothpaste on sale for $1, then you could get the toothpaste for free! Or when Walgreens offers Register Rewards on the toothpaste you can actually come out ahead when you use your coupon on the sale price, then get back a RR for the full purchase price!

2. Combine B1G1 free coupons with a similar sale. Let’s say that your store is having a sale on their Colgate toothpaste, B1G1 free. The sale price is $3.99 each. But let’s say you also have a coupon for a B1G1 free tube of Colgate. Use that coupon with the sale of B1G1 free and you will come away with two free tubes. Note that some stores do not allow this, so check the store coupon policy first. I know that Rite Aid used to allow this but they have since changed their coupon policy.

You can also use a cents-off coupon with a B1G1 Free coupon on the same sale. Lets say you are buying two boxes of pasta on a B1G1 Free sale. You can use a B1G1 Free coupon to get one item free, as well as a $1/1 coupon that you have for that item as well. The $1/1 coupon is for the box of pasta you are purchasing, the B1G1 coupon is getting your a free box for buying the first one. Make sense?

3. Combine your coupons with current rebates and rewards available. This is one of the main ways I have gotten ahead over the years. A Kraft rebate at Albertson’s a few years ago is an example. Kraft was offering a $20 rebate for purchasing certain items. I combined the sale prices at Albertson’s on those items with current coupons I had, which was $7 worth. I spent $14 plus tax out of pocket and got $20 back! I got paid to shop. Awesome!

This same concept is applied to Walgreens Register Rewards and Rite Aid +UP Rewards. You can combine the sale items with coupons, then get back the rewards immediately. It’s like cash in your pocket. Many times you can come out ahead.

4. Use manufacturer coupons with store coupons on the same product. Target, Fred Meyer & Walgreens are the stores in my area I do this at. These stores offer store coupons in their weekly ads or in their monthly coupon booklets. Many times there are manufacturer coupons (from the Sunday paper or printable coupons) that are for the same item. You can use these two coupons together!

For example, let’s say that you want to purchase Garnier shampoo at Walgreens for $3.99. Walgreens has a store coupon for $2/1. You also have a manufacturer coupon from the Sunday paper for $1/1. Use them together to get the shampoo for .99 cents.

5. Use your cents-off coupons to get free items. Did you know you can get many free things with regular cent-off coupons? You can! One way to do this is by purchasing trial size items. If you have a $1/1 coupon for Tide, use it on the .99 trial size. Just make sure you read the coupon to make sure it doesn’t mention that trial sizes are excluded. Many stores will apply the overage to your total as well! Walmart usually does. Target and Walgreens would adjust the coupon down to .99.

If you can’t use the coupon on a trial sized item, often you can use it on a full size item to get it for pennies! Wait for the item to go on sale before your coupon expires. Use patience!

SavingStar eCoupons

Did I mention SavingStar? I just received an email, telling me that I redeemed two of the eCoupons. $2 was added to my account after I purchased some McCain smiley fries, at Manda's request. Nostalgia made me some money!

Here's how the program works. You register your store rewards card with the site, and you select eCoupons to be loaded onto your card. When you buy the items, you do not receive $x off on your bill. Instead, the money is added to your account. After you reach just $5, you can have the savings deposited in your bank or paypal account. Or, you can select an amazon gift card.

Seems like a pretty good idea. They don't have a lot of coupons available, but maybe if it gets more popular? I like money being deposited in my paypal account!

Stores Refusing your Coupons? PRINT THIS

Print this letter from SmartSource and this letter from RedPlum and take them to any store that refuses to accept your internet coupons, in VIOLATION OF THEIR OWN POLICIES.

STORES DO NOT LOSE MONEY WHEN YOU USE COUPONS

I have a feeling that many of you don't realize that stores do not lose money when you redeem coupons. But, a news flash. They DON'T.

Here is a good explanation that I found, detailing the process of coupon redemption.

Most people who use coupons are not striving to TAKE MONEY from the grocery stores, they are simply trying to save money on groceries in a tight economy. We're not trying to SCAM the system. We're trying to stretch our budgets. Quite unfortunately, shows like Extreme Couponing are ruining the savings for the rest of us.

If a cashier gives you a hard time trying to redeem a coupon that you are entitled to use according to your store's corporate policy, REPORT THEM. You are the customer and you have a right to transactions that abide by the store's policies.  Even though Walmart WILL allow overages, I don't take advantage and get cash back. I purchase other items so that my orders NEVER come to a total of ZERO. Sometimes it might be a pack of gum or a bottle of water, but that's what I personally feel is right.

If the corporate office of a chain based store has a problem with their own coupon policy, they have the right to change it without notice. Until they do, you have a right to act within that policy.
